Trump suggests Greenland could come under U.S. control by end of term

U.S. President Donald Trump in an interview with Real America's Voice effectively allowed that by the end of his second term as head of state Greenland would be "under U.S. control."
Host Steve Gruber reminded him of his "prediction" about the fate of the island — that before Trump leaves the presidency Greenland would be "under our operational control."
"Yes, you will be right betting on that. Greenland is very important — from our point of view, not from theirs [Denmark's]," Trump said.
To the host's proposal to make a bet on the realization of such a scenario the president replied: "Okay."
In early July Trump upon arrival at the NATO summit in Ankara stated that he would like the United States to gain control over Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the kingdom is ready to defend "every inch" of NATO territory, including Greenland.
Greenland was a Danish colony until 1979 when it gained limited self-government. In 2009 it received autonomy but remained part of the kingdom.
Trump first proposed buying Greenland during his first presidential term. After returning to the White House he has repeatedly stated that the island should come under U.S. control. The authorities of Denmark and Greenland reject this possibility.
