Turkey detains last participant in 2016 assassination attempt on Erdogan

In Turkey, a fugitive participant in the group that carried out the assassination attempt on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the July 2016 coup attempt has been detained.

According to the department, as a result of a joint operation by intelligence units and the anti-terrorism department in Afyonkarahisar province, former Turkish Air Force Captain B. K., who was on the international wanted list under Interpol’s “red notice,” was taken into custody.
The detained helicopter pilot was part of a 37-member assault team that attacked the hotel in Marmaris where the Turkish leader was staying during the coup attempt. B. K. remained the last uncaptured member of this group.
He has been charged under several serious articles, including “assassination attempt on the president,” “murder in the line of duty,” “armed robbery,” and “violation of the military criminal code.” Turkish authorities link the detainee to the FETÖ organization, which organized the 2016 coup.
