Seventeen people killed in terrorist attack in northwestern Pakistan
At least 17 people were killed and 34 injured in a bomb explosion near a police station in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan.
According to Reuters, the terrorist attack occurred on August 2 in the Swat district. Among the dead are 7 police officers and 10 civilians.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
The provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which border Afghanistan, accounted for 90% of terrorist attacks in Pakistan in 2025. In both regions, various armed groups carry out attacks on Pakistani security forces and civilians under the pretext of protecting the rights of ethnic minorities — the Pashtuns and the Baloch.
Extremists in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are seeking the creation of a so-called Islamic state of Waziristan. The region is located in the tribal areas on the border with Afghanistan. It is one of Pakistan's hot spots due to the growing activity of militants from the Al-Qaeda terrorist network and the Fitna al-Khawarij group.
