Georgia says U.S. Embassy under Biden administration stoked hatred

The U.S. Embassy under the administration of former President Joe Biden was engaged in stoking hatred in Georgia, and the diplomatic mission's recent statement criticizing the work of the Interior Ministry's new department for combating hate speech is incomprehensible.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said this to reporters.

Several days ago, the U.S. Embassy said in a comment for the Georgian service of Radio Liberty that it was alarmed by the launch of the department for combating hate speech at Georgia's Interior Ministry.

"The U.S. Embassy under the previous administration was one of the main entities that tried to artificially stoke and spread hatred in Georgia. Unfortunately, these processes were coordinated. Based on this, I will say that this statement by the embassy is incomprehensible to me, but that is their business. As for us, we must do everything to prevent the spread of hatred in Georgian society," Kobakhidze said.

He stated once again that Georgia is in a wait-and-see mode and remains optimistic about the improvement of Georgian-American relations.

The special department for combating hate speech and defamatory statements in the public space began operating at Georgia's Interior Ministry on June 1. The department's main functions and responsibilities are monitoring and actively identifying public statements that damage a person's honor and contain hate speech, which bear signs of an offense under the code of administrative offenses.
