Nobel laureate demands that Japanese authorities lead nuclear disarmament
Michiko Kodama, deputy secretary general of the Japanese association Nihon Hidankyo, stated that the Japanese government must join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and lead the international disarmament process.
As Report informs, citing TASS, the 88-year-old representative of the organization, who survived the atomic bombing and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024 together with the association, emphasized Tokyo's unique status. According to her, Japan, as the only country to have suffered nuclear strikes during military operations, is obliged to show the world the path toward abandoning such arsenals.
Kodama called on non-nuclear states to unite and restrict the actions of nuclear powers, stating that nuclear weapons and humankind are incompatible.
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted by the UN in 2017. Official Tokyo still refuses to sign it, arguing that the document, drawn up without the participation of nuclear states, lacks mechanisms for effective implementation.
