Europe's tallest statue of the Virgin Mary unveiled in Poland

A statue of the Virgin Mary has been erected in the Polish village of Konotop, standing 55.6 meters tall including its pedestal. The pedestal is approximately 15 meters high.

According to the Associated Press, it is the tallest such statue in Europe.
The pedestal also houses an observation deck. By comparison, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro is 38 meters tall including its pedestal.

A taller statue of the Virgin Mary does exist, but not in Europe.

The monument in the Philippines is 98 meters tall. Fewer than 150 people live in the village.

The construction was financed by wealthy patrons.
Local authorities hope the statue will become a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists.
