Barrot: France is expelling two Iranian diplomats from the country
France intends to expel two Iranian diplomats in the near future in response to the detention in Iran of two employees of the French diplomatic mission in Tehran.
This was reported by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.
"I stated that these unacceptable actions would have consequences. In the coming days, two Iranian diplomats will be expelled from France," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced the detention in Iran on July 19 of two French diplomats. The minister specified that the detainees were engaged in Iran in implementing French programs "to support civil society," in particular certain Iranian scholars and artists. According to the minister, they were held for several hours, interrogated, and one of them was treated roughly. They were released and soon returned to France.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a telephone conversation with Barrot, stated that the actions of these diplomats were unacceptable, calling their actions unprofessional. He emphasized that compliance with the laws of the host country and generally recognized principles of diplomacy is "a necessary condition for the continued work of foreign missions."
