Media: Australia bans AI music from official charts

The Australian Recording Industry Association has banned music created with the help of generative artificial intelligence (AI) from official charts.

This was reported by the newspaper The New York Times (NYT).

Under the new rules, compositions generated entirely or to a significant degree by AI are prohibited from appearing in song ranking lists. However, such a ban does not apply to recordings in which such technologies were used as an auxiliary function.

According to the head of the Australian Recording Industry Association, Annabelle Herd, music rankings should reflect what Australians are listening to. However, a chart that rewards the results of AI's work, as she said, would "undermine the very foundation of recorded music." Many artists use AI, and "the tools and music charts should leave room for that," Herd noted. "But music created entirely by services on the basis of artists' recordings is quite another matter," she added.

The innovations were announced, as the publication reports, just a few months after a cover version of Madonna's song Like a Prayer, which topped the charts, outraged some representatives of the music industry, who believed that it had been created with the help of AI. The song, which was streamed more than 48 million times on Spotify, was later updated on the music platform, and information about the use of AI appeared in the credits.
