Harald's son Haakon becomes king of Norway
After the death of Harald V, his son Haakon automatically becomes king of Norway; he will choose a name and take the oath later, the broadcasting company NRK reports.
Harald died on Friday at the age of 89.
"In the Kingdom of Norway, a monarch always reigns. After the death of the king, his heir automatically ascends the throne," the report says.
As NRK specifies, an extraordinary session of the cabinet of ministers will be convened shortly, at which the new king will meet with the government for the first time as head of state.
"At the extraordinary session of the cabinet of ministers, the new king officially informs the government of the death of King Harald, of his accession to the throne, and of which royal name and motto he has adopted," the broadcasting company reports.
The new king will take the oath later in the Storting (parliament). As NRK specifies, this will likely take place a few days after Harald's death.
Simultaneously with Harald's death and the succession to the throne by his son Haakon, Princess Ingrid, Haakon's daughter, became the new crown princess.
