Chinese official sentenced to death for millions in bribes
A court sentenced Jiang Chaoliang, the former secretary of the Communist Party of China committee of Hubei province, to death with a reprieve for bribes totaling more than 746 million yuan ($111 million).
As reported by TASS, this was stated in a ruling of the Intermediate People's Court of the city of Nanjing.
The court handed the official a relatively lenient sentence for cooperating with the investigation. After two years of the formal reprieve, the highest form of punishment will be replaced with life imprisonment if the official fulfills the conditions established by Chinese law. In China, a "death sentence with a reprieve" does not mean the immediate execution of the highest form of punishment.
From 1995 to 2025, Jiang Chaoliang held several leadership positions in Chinese banks, as well as in the party structures of Jilin and Hubei provinces.
