Two people killed in southern Brazil due to the aftermath of a storm
Severe storms and rainfall have caused the deaths of at least two people in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
As 1news.az reports citing Xinhua, this was announced by Brazil's State Civil Defense Service.
It is noted that among the victims are an eight-year-old child, who was struck by a falling tree in Porto Alegre in the east of the state, and a 72-year-old man, whose car was swept away by flooding in Arroio Grande in the south.
From Friday evening until Saturday morning, the storm hit 21 municipalities. The hardest hit was Três Palmeiras in the north: about 1,000 homes were damaged by hail. In Quaraí, near Brazil's western border with Uruguay, authorities declared a state of emergency after hail damaged 349 homes. In the Serra Gaúcha region in the northeast of the country, 197 homes were damaged.
In Rio Grande do Sul, a high level of weather danger associated with the El Niño phenomenon persists. In 2024, the state experienced one of the most devastating climate disasters in Brazil. The floods affected nearly 90% of its territory and claimed the lives of more than 180 people.
