Somali security forces kill intelligence chief of the extremist group Al-Shabaab
Operatives of Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency have neutralized the head of the intelligence service of the extremist group Al-Shabaab, Abdullahi Hashi Labajir, known as Ikhlas.
As 1news.az reports, this was announced by Somali national television.
The elimination was carried out during an airstrike on militants in the Jilib area.
On August 4, the countries contributing contingents to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) declared their determination to step up strikes against Al-Shabaab.
AUSSOM's current mandate expires on December 31. The extension is intended to prevent a security vacuum and to give Somalia additional time to prepare its national forces to independently ensure the country's security.
AUSSOM began operating on January 1, 2025, replacing the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia. It provides the authorities with support in ensuring security and fighting the terrorist group Al-Shabaab. The UN Security Council authorized the deployment of nearly 12,000 military personnel and police officers as part of the mission.
