11 EU countries come out in favor of abolishing the veto right in foreign policy

Austria, Denmark, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, and Sweden have called for exploring the possibility of moving from the principle of unanimity to a qualified majority when making foreign policy decisions in the European Union.

Under the current rules, EU decisions in the field of foreign policy are made unanimously. This allows one country to block an initiative of the other 26 member states.

As the publication notes, such a situation arose repeatedly during Viktor Orban's 16-year rule in Hungary. Before leaving office in April, he "regularly provoked the indignation of his colleagues by blocking decisions in exchange for concessions and his own gain."

At the same time, the transition from the principle of unanimity to a qualified majority also requires the consent of all European Union states.
