Nepal flood death toll surpasses 1,100, nearly 5,000 missing
The death toll from the devastating flooding in Nepal has reached 1,127 people.
Another 4,858 people are listed as missing, the Kathmandu Post reports, citing police.
Search and rescue teams continue to find bodies in the affected areas and downstream along the Bhotekoshi River. According to Nepal's police, 45 bodies were found in Rasuwa, where the flooding began, 155 in Nuwakot, 59 in Dhading, 348 in Chitwan, 66 in Gorkha, 38 in Tanahun, 217 in East Nawalparasi and 190 in West Nawalparasi. Nine more bodies were found on Indian territory.
Of the 1,127 bodies of the dead, 1,113 have undergone postmortem and legal identification. Ninety-five bodies have been handed over to relatives. Information about 911 unidentified bodies has been posted on the police website.
A total of 7,912 police officers have been sent to the affected areas for search and rescue operations. They are also taking part in evacuating residents, distributing humanitarian aid and handling the bodies that have been found. A total of 6,541 people have been evacuated from the affected areas.
