Trump suggests Maduro could face new charges in the U.S.

American leader Donald Trump said again on September 2 that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro could face new charges in the United States.

"They have been charged with committing very serious crimes," he said during remarks at the White House, referring to Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. "Besides that, I think they were not charged with emptying their prisons [to send prisoners] to the U.S., but maybe they will be." Trump has previously repeatedly claimed that the Venezuelan authorities facilitated illegal migration from the republic to the United States.

In March, Trump also suggested that "other trials lie ahead" concerning Maduro and that "other cases will be brought" against him.

On January 3, the American military attacked a number of facilities in Venezuela, seized Maduro and his wife and took them out of the country. On January 5, they appeared before the federal court for the Southern District of New York. They are accused of involvement in drug trafficking. Maduro and his wife did not plead guilty. The functions of the Venezuelan head of state are being performed by authorized president Delcy Rodriguez, who under Maduro held the post of executive vice president of the republic.

Maduro's defense earlier asked the court to dismiss the first count of the indictment, which charges him with conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism.
