Court blocks Trump's new birthright citizenship order
A federal judge has blocked an attempt by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to put into effect a new order limiting the number of people eligible for birthright citizenship.
The document was issued after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the administration's previous attempt to impose similar restrictions.
A federal district judge in the state of Maryland issued a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit brought by organizations defending immigrants' rights. Last year, they obtained a ruling from the same court suspending the effect of Trump's original 2025 order, which provided for restrictions on obtaining citizenship by right of birth.
On June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the initial attempt to deprive children whose parents are not U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents of the country (green card holders) of the right to citizenship. The court found that such restrictions violate the citizenship clause enshrined in the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
