Lavrov: Russia will close Goethe-Institut branches
The branches of the Goethe-Institut in Russia will be closed.
This was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
According to him, the decision was made after the German authorities announced the closure of the Russian House in Berlin.
"The Germans have Goethe-Institut branches here — in Moscow, and in Peter, and in Yekaterinburg. Of course, they will be closed after our cultural center was kicked out of there. Otherwise we would not respect ourselves," Lavrov said at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).
This week, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt accused Russia of involvement in the drone incident at the Leipzig/Halle airport. According to media reports, the drone was discovered in early August next to a Ukrainian cargo plane transporting ammunition.
After that, the German authorities announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn, as well as the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin. The Russian side called these accusations unsubstantiated.
The Goethe-Institut is a nonprofit organization engaged in promoting the German language and culture abroad.
