In Thailand, a multimillionaire has decided to give up his wealth and become a monk
In Thailand, multimillionaire Siripong Akkarasriyuk, the founder of the popular ice cream brand Hawell's, has decided to sell his business and become a monk.
As 1news.az reports, this was announced by AsiaOne.
The entrepreneur has put the company up for sale for 165 million baht (8.5 million manats — ed.). The deal will include a plot of land, an office, a factory, a store, the Hawell's brand, ice cream recipes and other assets. Akkarasriyuk promises to pay another 5 million baht (258,000 manats — ed.) to whoever helps find a buyer at the stated price.
The businessman said that he has been planning to devote himself entirely to Buddhism for about 15 years. He intends to finally leave behind his usual social and family life in two years. Before that, Akkarasriyuk wants to buy land and set up a place for meditation.
Hawell's appeared in 1999 and within a few years grew to 22 outlets in Bangkok and neighboring provinces. Later the brand faced pressure from large competitors, and in 2014 it closed its last outlet in a shopping center. In 2023, Akkarasriyuk brought Hawell's back to the market, opening a separate store.
