Madrid takes control of Ceuta's port for a migrant camp

Spain's central government has taken control of the port in the autonomous enclave of Ceuta and authorized the deployment of a temporary tent camp for migrants there.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente signed the corresponding order despite resistance from the regional government led by President Juan Jesús Vivas.

Local authorities stated that the port area is critically important for the enclave's life support systems, and that a fuel terminal is located in the immediate vicinity of the chosen site. Earlier, the regional administration also rejected options for housing migrants in sports facilities and a former military hospital. At the same time, another camp for 900 people is being built in the Los Rosales district, which has sparked a wave of protests among local residents.
