Trump backs idea of renaming the state of New Mexico as New America - VIDEO
U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed on Truth Social a proposal to rename the American state of New Mexico as New America.
"Many have suggested renaming New Mexico — one of the most famous states where election results have ever been rigged — as New America. It sounds far more prestigious and beautiful for the residents of this potentially incredible state. Wow, I like it!" the head of state wrote. Beneath the post, in a video generated with the help of AI, the president changes the state's name on a roadside sign in New Mexico to the tune of the Village People hit YMCA and dances.
Under the American Constitution, the federal government cannot change the names of states; that is the prerogative of their authorities and residents. The corresponding amendments must be introduced into state legislation after the new name is approved by the legislature and then by the population in a referendum. If the proposal is approved, the state authorities inform Congress and the U.S. government of the changes. New Mexico media reported that residents would not support the idea of renaming.
Earlier, the president signed executive orders under which the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario were renamed the Gulf of America and Lake America, respectively. The orders change the way these places are referred to by the federal government and on federal maps. However, Trump's successors as president may sign executive orders reversing these changes.
