EU to demand that Hungary repeal its anti-LGBT law

A new round of confrontation between EU institutions and Hungary will begin in October.

The European Parliament will demand that Budapest repeal its anti-LGBT law.

According to the television channel, in October the European Parliament will send a mission to Hungary to assess the country's compliance with European norms, including the conditions for repealing the current law. At the same time, Péter Magyar's government does not intend to abandon it for now.

Representatives of the mission will also hold meetings with representatives of civil society and non-governmental organizations. A report will be prepared following the visit.

In addition, the mission is to assess whether conditions exist for terminating the procedure against Hungary under Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union. Theoretically, this mechanism could lead to the country being stripped of its voting rights in the Council of the EU for violating the European Union's "norms and values."

The procedure against Hungary was launched in 2018 with the aim of putting pressure on the government of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
