Peskov comments on the results of parliamentary elections in Hungary

Russia respects the choice made by the people of Hungary, who elected Péter Magyar as the new prime minister of the country, stated Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President, commenting on the results of the parliamentary elections held in the republic the day before.

“Hungary has made its choice. We respect this choice,” he said.

According to Peskov, Russia hopes that under the new leadership of Hungary, the “very pragmatic” contacts between the two countries will continue.

“What actions the new leadership of Hungary will take—well, we probably need to be patient and see what happens,” Peskov said.

Commenting on the question of the future fate of the Druzhba oil pipeline in terms of its relevance to Hungary and other European countries, the Kremlin representative said: “You need to ask Hungary or someone else in Europe about this.”

He emphasized that Russia is interested in good relations with Hungary and all other European countries.

“We are interested in building good relations with Hungary, as well as with all European countries. We know that, unfortunately, reciprocity cannot yet be spoken of with regard to European countries, but Russia is open to dialogue,” Peskov said.

In his opinion, the elections in Hungary will not affect the course of Russia’s war against Ukraine: “I don’t think this is related to the prospects for the development of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. These are probably different processes, so I don’t see any connection here.”

At the same time, Putin’s press secretary claims that Russia intends to achieve peace through negotiations.

“We are focused on achieving our goals in the context of Ukraine. For us, it would be preferable to achieve our goals through political and diplomatic negotiations, but until these negotiations yield results, the special military operation continues,” he said.
