Murder of 8 children in Louisiana: Attacker was a US Army veteran

The shooting in Louisiana (USA) was carried out by US Army veteran Shamar Elkins.

Seven of the eight children killed were his own, according to the New York Post, citing local authorities.

Earlier, the Louisiana State Police reported that eight children, aged between one and 14 years, were killed in a shooting in the American city of Shreveport. The suspect in the attack was shot dead by police officers during a chase.

"The shooter in Louisiana who killed eight children, including seven of his own, was a 31-year-old army veteran," the publication states.

Shortly before the tragedy, he had posted numerous photos with the children, including from a joint Easter church visit. In one of the posts, the man appealed to God for help in overcoming mental health issues.

American media also report that in March 2019, three years after completing his service in the US Army, Elkins was arrested on charges of illegal use and carrying of a firearm on school grounds and received an 18-month suspended sentence.
