Hamas completes preparations for transfer of power in Gaza

The Palestinian movement Hamas has completed all preparations for the full transfer of power in the Gaza Strip and is ready to carry out disarmament, reports the New York Times, citing two officials from the political leadership of Hamas.

A Palestinian technocratic committee for managing Gaza was announced on January 14, coinciding with the announcement of the start of the second phase of the United States' plan for peaceful settlement. According to Arab media, the committee members are still in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

According to the newspaper, the only obstacle to this process is the absence of a new administration directly in the Gaza Strip itself—currently, it operates from Cairo. According to sources, Hamas does not demand representation in the new administration; however, the movement intends to continue participating in Palestinian political life and resisting Israel until an independent Palestinian state is established.

Additionally, officials noted that, in anticipation of the power transfer, all processes related to new appointments and promotions have been suspended.

"Hamas is ready to give up thousands of automatic rifles and other weapons belonging to their police service and other internal security services," the New York Times material states.

However, when asked whether Hamas would disarm its military wing, the officials did not provide a clear answer.
