Pashinyan called on the EAEU not to torpedo the processes initiated by Armenia

Our goal is to create alternatives for Armenia, I think that this is the legitimate right of any country, and I think that all countries are working to have alternatives.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said this in a conversation with Russian journalists on August 7.

«I think that the best position for the Eurasian Economic Union would be not to torpedo this process, but, on the contrary, to work on increasing the competitiveness and attractiveness of the Eurasian Economic Union. Armenia is ready to work on this.

As for the choice, first the choice must be created, and only after that can it be made.

I have taken note of the statement of my colleagues from the EAEU of May 29 and I treat it with respect. A very interesting nuance: our colleagues support the idea of holding a referendum in Armenia on the issue of joining the European Union. I highly appreciate such a position.

There will be a referendum, but after Armenia officially applies to the European Union on the issue of membership, and it is necessary to work on this institutionally.

Today it is impossible to hold a referendum, because the subject of this referendum does not exist.

If we now organize a referendum and call for a decision to be made.

What will the reaction of the citizens of Armenia be? They will ask: and what prospects do we have of becoming members of the European Union? And what is our road map, and so on? There will be very many questions to which we have no answers, and no one has these answers. And what is happening now in the EAEU space only provokes a negative perception of the Eurasian Economic Union in Armenia. I mean the restrictions that our respected Russian colleagues have imposed on Armenian goods.

For any country it is very important to raise the quality, competitiveness and standards of production. We are working on this, and other EAEU countries are working on this as well», Pashinyan noted.

He called for «not negativizing» this process, describing it as a good opportunity to work together on increasing the attractiveness and competitiveness of the Eurasian Economic Union.

«It is very important to understand that without the possibility of implementing the fundamental principles of Eurasian economic development, the EAEU will find itself in crisis.

What is happening now on the issue of Armenian goods is, of course, a problem for Armenia, but it is also a serious problem for the EAEU.

In practice, it turns out that the EAEU does not work. If it does not work in principle, it means that the EAEU does not work», the Prime Minister of Armenia noted.

He jokingly gave a positive assessment of a journalist's proposal to create an alternative union headed by Armenia.
