Péter Szijjártó faces up to three years in prison in bribery case
Former Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó could face up to three years in prison in a case involving an alleged bribe.
The investigation was previously handled by the prosecutor's office, but the case was transferred to the Budapest Police Headquarters based on jurisdiction.
It is noted that Szijjártó is no longer a member of parliament and does not have parliamentary immunity. If his guilt is proven, the former head of the ministry faces up to three years of imprisonment.
The scandal surrounding Szijjártó erupted after the leak of recordings of his telephone conversations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. According to sources, in the recordings the former minister disclosed classified information about internal discussions in the EU, and also offered assistance on the issue of easing sanctions in exchange for arguments to use at meetings of European ministers.
