Syrian court sentences Bashar al-Assad to death
A court in Syria has sentenced the country's former president, Bashar al-Assad, to death.
The court found him guilty of crimes against humanity, the Syrian Arab News Agency SANA reports.
Bashar al-Assad was overthrown in December 2024. After that, he left Syria and flew to Russia, where he received asylum.
The armed opposition came to power in Syria. During the transition period, the country is led by Ahmed al-Sharaa. Bashar al-Assad headed Syria from 2000. He took the post of president after his father, Hafez al-Assad, following a referendum with no alternative candidates. On the night of December 8, 2024, fighters of the armed opposition entered Damascus. Bashar al-Assad left the capital by plane. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said at the time that Assad was safe in Russia.
The death sentence was the outcome of the case's consideration by the Syrian court, which found the former president guilty of crimes against humanity.
