Andras Baka elected new president of Hungary

The National Assembly of Hungary (unicameral parliament) elected former chairman of the Supreme Court (2009-2011) Andras Baka as the new head of state, whose candidacy was nominated by the ruling Tisza party.

This was reported by the newspaper Nepszava.

During the secret ballot, 140 deputies voted in support, 6 voted against. The publication writes that Baka will take office on August 19.

Earlier, the Tisza party and Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar forced the president appointed under Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Tamas Sulyok, to vacate the post. On July 18, he signed the 17th amendment to the basic law adopted by parliament, providing for his removal from office.
