Record rainfall in Japan leaves four people dead
A record amount of precipitation fell in Chiba Prefecture east of Tokyo, and four people fell victim to the disaster, Japan's public broadcaster NHK reports.
Dozens of buildings in the prefecture have been flooded, and four people sustained minor injuries. One person is missing, and another is in a state of cardiac arrest.
Heavy rains in Chiba began on Thursday evening. According to NHK, record volumes of precipitation were recorded in various areas.
Thus, in the prefecture's capital, the city of Chiba, 348 mm of precipitation fell in 12 hours, the highest figure in the history of observations, roughly three times the average monthly norm for August.
On Friday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency lowered the warning level for the threat of rains and landslides from the maximum fifth level to the fourth and lower in various municipalities.
During the raging of the elements in the city of Ichikawa, several cars became stuck on flooded roads, and public transportation suspended operations in Chiba.
