Colombia's president asks Trump to temporarily lift tariffs because of earthquake

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has asked U.S. President Donald Trump to temporarily suspend the increased customs tariffs on Colombian goods.

As Day.Az reports citing REN-TV, the head of state wrote on the social network X that he had made a proposal to suspend the tariffs in order to support Colombian entrepreneurs who have faced the severe consequences of the devastating earthquake. De la Espriella also expressed gratitude to the American side for the financial and humanitarian assistance provided, emphasizing the particular importance of the allied relations between Washington and Bogotá.

During the conversation, Donald Trump expressed solidarity and condolences over the loss of life. It was reported earlier that 294 people had died as a result of the tremors in Colombia, and the number of those injured exceeded 3,900. The United States imposed 12.5 percent tariffs on 60 countries, including Colombia, on July 23.
