Driver fell asleep at the wheel: bus carrying 57 passengers overturns in Hungary

At least 12 people have died in a serious traffic accident involving a Polish bus in eastern Hungary.

As Day.Az reports citing Gazeta.ru and the Reuters agency, the tragedy occurred on the night of August 16 near the town of Mezőkeresztes. The Polish-registered bus, which was heading toward the city of Nyíregyháza, veered off the road into a ditch and overturned. At the time of the accident, there were 57 passengers and two drivers on board.

According to preliminary data, the man behind the wheel fell asleep; after the incident he was detained by law enforcement agencies. In addition to the 12 dead, at least 10 more people sustained injuries of varying severity. Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski expressed their condolences and confirmed that Warsaw is in constant contact with the Hungarian authorities.
