"Very good relations" with Kim: Trump orders scaling back of exercises with South Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump has instructed Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth to reduce the scale of joint U.S.–South Korea military exercises.

He announced this on his social network Truth Social.

He noted that it is already too late to cancel the joint events. In this connection, the American leader decided to scale back the exercises with Seoul, which send a "totally inappropriate hostile signal" to Pyongyang. Trump emphasized that he has "very good relations" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Earlier, North Korea condemned the U.S.–South Korea military exercises planned for the summer and vowed to exercise its right to self-defense. In addition, North Korea's Foreign Ministry stated that Washington's nuclear strategy would provoke a new arms race.

The "Ulchi Freedom Shield" exercises will begin on August 17 and last 11 days.
