Armenian parliamentary opposition turns down Anna Hakobyan

The heads of the opposition factions in Armenia's parliament have not accepted the proposal of Anna Hakobyan, wife of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, to meet and discuss the idea of a bill to combat domestic violence.

"Our faction has no desire to accept this proposal," the head of the "Strong Armenia" faction, Narek Karapetyan, told journalists in parliament.

Earlier, Anna Hakobyan spoke about the need to strengthen in Armenia the institution of the family, free from physical, psychological and any other types of violence. To that end, Hakobyan proposed singling out domestic violence in the Criminal Code as a separate type of crime and toughening the punishment for it. In her opinion, such a bill should preferably be adopted unanimously, and therefore Hakobyan proposed that the opposition factions hold discussions.
