The world's most expensive artist Yayoi Kusama has passed away - PHOTO
The world-renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama died on August 14, 2026, in a hospital in Tokyo — she was 97 years old.
This was reported on the official page of the Yayoi Kusama Museum on the social network Instagram.
Yayoi Kusama was one of the most famous representatives of avant-garde art. Over her long creative career, she worked in a wide variety of fields, including visual art, performance, literature, and poetry.
As noted in the museum's message, Y. Kusama continued to paint until the very last days of her life. The artist also remained true to her conviction that love is capable of saving the world.
«We will continue to fulfill her wishes and, through art, bring hope and strength to people all over the world», the statement says.
Yayoi Kusama was born in 1929 in the Japanese city of Matsumoto. She gained worldwide fame thanks to her recognizable artistic images — above all the motifs of multicolored dots, mirror installations, and large-scale spaces creating the effect of infinity.
The scale of the artist's recognition is also confirmed by art market indicators. According to a report by the insurance company Hiscox, in 2023 Y. Kusama's works were sold at the world's largest auctions for approximately 81 million dollars (137.7 million manats), which made her the best-selling contemporary artist of the 21st century.
Let us note that, starting in April 2015, Yayoi Kusama's work «Flowers That Bloom Tomorrow» became part of the permanent exhibition of the Heydar Aliyev Center.
