Spain may again refuse to take part in Eurovision because of Israel

The president of the Spanish public broadcasting corporation RTVE, José Pablo López, intends to propose to the corporation's Board of Directors that Spain maintain its withdrawal from participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027.

J.P. López stated this on September 22 during a speech at a meeting of the joint commission of the Congress and Senate of Spain for parliamentary oversight of RTVE's activities, 1news.az reports, citing RTVE's official website.

According to the head of RTVE, the corporation maintains its position regarding Israel's participation in the contest. He noted that over the past year RTVE, together with other European broadcasting organizations, has advocated changes in the governance of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU/UER), as well as the strengthening of the contest's principles of neutrality and the prevention of its use for political purposes.

At the same time, according to López, the changes undertaken are not enough. In particular, he pointed to the continued participation of the Israeli public broadcaster in Eurovision and stated that, in connection with this, he intends once again to propose to RTVE's Board of Directors that Spain's absence from the contest be maintained.

Recall that in 2026 Spain already did not take part in Eurovision following RTVE's decision to withdraw from the contest amid Israel's participation, and if the new proposal is approved, the country will miss the contest for the second year in a row.
