EBU responds to Spain's possible withdrawal from Eurovision 2027

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has responded to Spain's possible refusal to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027.

As 1news.az reports, citing the official Eurovision website, the contest's director Martin Green stated that the EBU has reviewed the statement by the president of the Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, José Pablo López, and respects the Spanish broadcaster's internal process.

According to him, the EBU will await the final decision of RTVE's Board of Directors regarding Spain's participation in the 2027 contest. Martin Green also noted that over the past year the EBU has carefully considered broadcasters' concerns, and as a result substantial changes have been made to the staging of Eurovision.

In particular, measures against excessive external influence and promotion have been strengthened, voting restrictions have been tightened, professional juries have returned to the semifinals, and their composition has become broader and more diverse. Additional measures have also been adopted to ensure the safe conduct of the contest.

At the same time, the EBU expressed regret over Spain's possible absence from Eurovision 2027. "RTVE has participated in the contest since 1961, and we greatly appreciate its significant contribution to the history of Eurovision," Martin Green said.

He also noted that the EBU would be disappointed if Spain does not join the contest, which in 2027 will be held in Bulgaria, and expressed hope that RTVE will return to participation in the future.

Note that the final decision on Spain's participation in Eurovision 2027 has not yet been made, since following José Pablo López's statement the matter must be considered by RTVE's Board of Directors.
