Trump signs executive order to combat "birth tourism"

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at banning the practice of "birth tourism," which involves coming to the country to give birth so that the child automatically obtains American citizenship, the White House website reports.

"Right now people are building a business around this, wealthy people are building a business around birthright citizenship. That's not how it should work," Trump emphasized at the signing ceremony.

According to him, "hundreds of thousands" of people have taken advantage of this way of obtaining American citizenship.

The president signed another executive order, also concerning the right to citizenship by birth and involving an expansion of the definition of persons who are not entitled to automatic citizenship, including "foreign enemies of the United States, members of foreign terrorist organizations," along with the children of diplomats and employees of other recognized international organizations.
