Armenian parliament rejects candidacy of supporter of the Karabakh agenda
Areg Hovsepyan, a deputy from the opposition faction "Strong Armenia" who made a populist and revanchist statement about the "Karabakh movement" the day before, was defeated in parliament.
The voting results demonstrated the parliamentary majority's unwillingness to entrust a key foreign policy area to a candidate from the radical-revanchist wing. Known for her harsh statements and her refusal to recognize the established geopolitical realities, Hovsepyan found herself among those opposition nominees whose revanchist agenda met with a decisive rebuff within the walls of the National Assembly, Armenian media report.
During the secret ballot in parliament, 40 deputies voted in favor of Hovsepyan's appointment, while 62 parliamentarians voted "against."
Hovsepyan, who had previously worked both in the structures of the former illegitimate administration of the separatist regime and in Armenia's Foreign Ministry, attempted to revive slogans that have discredited themselves. The day before, having stated in parliament that "the Karabakh movement did not begin with the decision of one person and will not end with the decision of one person," Hovsepyan pompously added: "It was a movement of the entire Armenian people. No one has the right by their own decision to close a page that is inscribed in the history of an entire people."
Armenia's parliament elected 9 of the 12 chairs of the standing parliamentary committees. All 8 candidates from the "Civil Contract" faction and one from the "Armenia" faction were elected. None of the three candidates from "Strong Armenia" were elected.
